meta meat is the collaborative project of two electronic musicians and composers: somekilos (half of 2kilos &More) and phil von (co-leader of von magnet) who share a deep passion for percussion and rhythms. the name meta meat associates the source of flesh (meat) with its passage beyond (meta). a very physical live act bound to propel our bodies and souls into another state, a state of release and trance, incarnating a wish to elevate our animalistic simplicity towards a higher conscience of being.

the duo's joined skills and energies combine real drumming & beats (somekilos) with real stamping & banging (phil von) as a solid foundation for a vibrant 'duel' battling against twisted virtual synths, samples and machines. as the electronic sounds are treated as radically as the acoustic percussion, the finished music of meta meat turns out sounding utterly 'tribal' - cruel, merciless, sad, pandemic but harshly accurate. two antagonistic cultures scrape and collide against each other, occidental versus oriental, modern versus archaic… and even an eastern asian third element is added to the balance to stir an even more complex and brutal electro-ethnic blend. what if this album was a weapon, the perfect soundtrack for our actual world wars? how can we envisiage a better world? let us first try to transcend its poignancy.

enhanced by the magnificent production and mixing of def, this debut album is a samurai pact, a commitment to raw musical integrity and an oath to elegant barbaric sonic power.

OBSKÜRE MAG - (F)
15.01.17
www.obskuremag.net/chroniques/meta-meat-album/

SONIC SEDUCER MAGAZINE - (D)
Dez 2016

Sascha Bertoncin

I.R.M. (INDIEROCKMAG) - (F)
www.indierockmag.com/article28372.html

(Rabbit - 04.01.17)

SILENCE AND SOUND - (F)
26.12.16
silenceandsound.me/2016/12/26/meta-meat/

Roland Torres

ELEKTROSKULL - (SW)

With the body as an instrument
Not many minutes passes by until you get the idea: This is a duo who like percussion and rythms and the bandname Meta Meat is a reference to using the body as an instrument. What we find here is an unusual and very appealing mix of analog percussion, instruments and rhythms made using the body (folding, stamping, impact on the body etc) and harsh industrial sounds created on synthesizers. Horn instruments and some other instruments traditionally used in folk and world music from different parts of the world are also included. Most exotic instruments on the list is the zapateados – a kind of Mexican dance shoe that, like tap shoes emits rhythmic sound when used.
All this is woven deftly with modern electronics and creating music with one foot in a trance-inducing ritual music and the other on a club floor in a European city.
To further your spirit it also unfolds a nice ambient sound carpet that is melodic and gives depth to the music. The best track is the just over six minutes long “Shudder” a track that makes me think of the Swedish act Mago and their mix of ambient and rhythmic industial.

ALTVENGER MAGAZINE - (NL)
www.altvenger.com/meta-meat-metameat-album-review/

In these dark days where mutual respect is often replaced by spreading fear and hatred against the unknown, this self-titled album of Meta Meat is kind of the soundtrack to these fast-changing times. How accurate this album is!

Phil Von (Co-leader of Von Magnet) and Some Kilos (half of 2 kilos & more and drummer for Von Magnet) worked together on this mutual project called Meta Meat on the labels Ant-Zen and Audiotrauma. Not surprisingly, it sounds a lot like Von Magnet (founded in 1985 in London) with some more repetitive electronic influences.

The ten tracks on this album vary intensively from harsh and fierce ethnic tribal beats to trance-like dark ambient soundscapes. The music shows us the beauty of different cultures coming together in experimental, programmed electronic industrial beats, versus traditional, physical man-made ethnic tribal percussion which takes you on a cinematic-like journey. The album cover shows two naked men facing towards darkness holding a fragile glass sculpture, showing both strength and vulnerability, which matches the music exactly. Light versus dark, warm versus cold, unleashed raw energy versus ritual peace. This is an intense album in all perspectives.

BRUTAL RESONANCE - (US)
29.11.16

Upon hitting the play button for the first track 'melt' on META MEAT's self-titled debut, I knew I was going to be in for one hell of a ride throughout the rest of the album. The tribal drumming and chants mixed with the synthetic world of electronic instruments was absolutely awe inspiring. The name of the band perfectly fits with how they present their music. "MEAT" represents the body and flesh of man and "META" represents a transcendence beyond mankind, just as their physical drums are just that with the electronic verse surpassing that. It is quite a thrill ride.

META MEAT is the project of somekilos (2kilos &More) and phil von (von magnet). While somekilos is the drummer and beat maker in the band, phil von is the banger and stamper of the group. Prior to this album, META MEAT has only made an appearance on the compilation Katharsis Compilation 1 where they contributed a version of their track 'esapism'. After that appearance we are in the now with their self-titled, debut release META MEAT.

META MEAT is a ten track album full of percussive blasts and sonic-fueled barbaric overtures. 'melt' starts off the album and slowly lassos us in with a dark, atmospheric texture. The bits of drum slowly come in one after another, starting off with a single hit and adding in more as the song goes on. It's a slow paced moving piece full of synths that give off a ritualistic feeling. 'backstitch' brings forth frenetic drums and a deep, background noise sometimes infused with chanting. Getting into the warrior spirit, 'sword' sounds like a track that could be played during a confrontation between two feverish combatants.

'shudder' is the first song on the album that embraces the tech-side of META MEAT's foundations and uses electronics to their benefit more than not. Think of this as an IDM laced track with varying degrees of background ambiance. 'deepen' has a pattern of going from soft, to loud, and back down to soft again. But each repeat of that phase result in movements that are more booming than the previous. 'tamed' is another back and forth song that battles out both synthetic movements and man made drumming and that was beautiful.

With 'rampage' the percussion once again goes more electronic making for a cyber-tribal sort of song. 'escapism' is a fast song whose drumming gets louder and louder as the song progresses; it's like the build up of an anxiety attack. 'behaviour' is a slow moving piece full of subtle twists and turns as well as quiet, reflective moments. Coming as the last song on the album, 'converge' ends in an almighty blast of noise, percussion, and heavy ambiance for a beautiful finale. It all goes quiet at the end with a mere twinkle setting us off.
META MEAT's self-titled debut is the type of album that can be sought for comfort, for battle ready demonstrations, as well as spiritual reflection. The fusion of man made drumming and electronic foreplay is astounding. Cheers to this duo for putting out one hell of an album. Steven Gullotta

FLUX WEBZINE - (IT)

Published by Alessandro Violante on November 21, 2016

It’s november and while watching outside from your window, you’ll probably see a gray sky with thick rain. If this affects your mood, you’ll could feel upset too. Just take Meta Meat (a new project born from Somekilos of 2 Kilos & more and Phil Von of Von Magnet) first album, entitled Metameat, press play and close your eyes. You’ll awake in Armenia or near there, listening to the sounds produced by Durduk and Zurna, and suddenly you’ll feel the heat and the burning energy unleashed by its songs.
Meta Meat is the perfect meeting of tribal rhythms and electronic music, of real and artificial, of meat / flesh (Meat) and its “spiritual” side, its “passage beyond”, an expression quoted by the promo notes written by Ant-Zen. But it’s also a refined homage to rhythm itself, detaching from its classic heavy-distorted sound, always searching for new sonic frontiers, in particular in its collaborations with Audiotrauma. This is one of them.
This doesn’t mean Ant-Zen followers won’t found the trademarks they love. In this tribal journey through far places and cultures, distortions and cold rhythms progressively show themselves, although only being a part of the whole and not the main elements.
The opener Melt recalls the already mentioned musical and cultural melting-pot and, after an Eastern-influenced introduction, an ancestral, minimal and recursive rhythm traces the bounds of the song. Backstitch, the first song available from the album on Bandcamp, focuses on a kaleidoscopic maremagnum of warm rhythms, widening the gaze and the ears of the listener / observer, opening to a vast, far and enormous desert area. Its main element, separating the almost geometrical rhythmic building from the ambient-like sequence, is silence, a sort of tribute to John Cage, and when music starts again, the listener is fully immersed.
There are also more mid tempo songs, such as Sword and Shudder. In particular, the second one has an almost IDM syncopated rhythm, an approach similar to that of Axiome. If Deepen, through its slow tempo, represents the quintessence of the fusion between post-industrial and tribal sounds, although highlighting its electronic soul in an exciting crescendo, Tamed is one of the peaks of this album. A tribal rhythm starts quietly, while slowly its intensity grows, wrapped in an Eastern-like soundscape, until it stops and let a strongly syncopated rhythm emerge. The song ends with a strong tribal ballet in crescendo.
Rampage exhibits martial rhythms, highlighting cold distorted sounds evoking in a larger extent Ant-Zen’s classic sound, while Escapism is focused on an engaging and syncopated rhythm. Converge closes the album with tribal rhythms in crescendo, introduced by cinematic soundscapes.
It isn’t easy to describe Meta Meat first album, a very well made mix of different worlds. On the one side there’s East, on the other side there’s West, with all their peculiar differences. It’s something “new”, a sort of experiment. Meta Meat remind us that everything started with rhythm, and that rhythmic noise fans should search the nature of rhythm very far in space and time. An engaging album, worthy of your attention. Rating: 9

MACHINIST - (Belarus)
oct 16
www.machinistmusic.net/reviews/metameatcd2016.html

[8 баллов]. vAlien/DJ Commando LABELLA
